Fabulous Example of NWC  Haida Argillite Storied Model Panel Pipe
For sale is an authentic Northwest Coast argillite panel pipe.
Argillite is a variety of shale and the source is limited to a single quarry on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands B.C.) making the stone quite rare.
Large argillite pipes in mint condition are very difficult to find as most are much smaller than this one.
Depicted on this pipe are two wolves facing each other with the bowl in the middle and a raven at each end.
The figures have shell for eyes.
These characters are usually a display of the carver`s own crests. Crests are markers of identity, indicating personal inheritance and symbolizing the family`s wealth, position and honor.
This totem is signed by the Haida artist Glen Pollard(1957-) born in Skidegate, Haida Gwaii and is known as a major argillite carver.
The inscription on the base reads "Glen Pollard".
This piece is 17" L X 2 1/2" H X 3/4" W and in excellent condition.
